Men in Grey Suits
Like any died-in-the-wool Capetonian I am a keen – if fairly incompetent – surfer. The gentle breakers of Muizenberg are my stomping ground; a safe spot to paddle where there are no rocky reefs or rip currents to catch me unawares.

Unfortunately, it's also the stomping ground for some other aquatic animals more sleek and streamlined than I.

Great White Sharks... although superstitious surfers prefer to refer to them simply as 'the men in grey suits', lest saying their name brings them a-swimmin'.

However, when the wind's offshore and the surf is glassy it's easy to forget about them. They're probably in close proximity more times than I care to think of, but while I'm out there bobbing at the backline, giving my shoulders a rest, it's somewhat reassuring to know that there are a few dedicated souls on dry land keeping the surf safe for the rest of us.

The shark-spotters program was born at Muizenberg, and has since spread to other beaches in the Cape Peninsula. With spotters on the mountainside keeping a keen eye out for the tell-tale shadows in the waters below, surfers and swimmers can enjoy the beaches at ease.

It's a fantastic program that deserves every plaudit and penny it gets. You can read more about this wonderful initiative here and, next time you're swimming in the Cape's chilly waters, know that those good guys are keeping an eye out for you.
